Pakistan squad: Younis Khan (capt), Salman Butt, Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad, Shoaib Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal (wk), Fawad Alam, Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar, Yasir Arafat, Saeed Ajmal.

The reaction to the 15 man squad for ODI’s against Australia has generally been positive with most fans approving the selection of Nasir Jamshed, Shoaib Akhtar, Ahmed Shahzad and Saeed Ajmal. However, this thread argues that the some players should not have been selected.

Is it Younis who is running the show?

There were reports that Younis was against the selection of Ahmed Shahzad in the Sri

Why was Ahmed Shahzad chosen over Khalid Latif?

Lanka series earlier this year. It is very strange hence that Ahmed has now been selected for this series, and that too against one of the best sides in the world. For those who are not aware, Ahmed Shahzad is a 17 year old aggressive opener from Lahore who has only played 12 List A matches at domestic level. With such inexperience, why was he selected over the likes of Khalid Latif and Khurram Manzoor?

Khalid Latif is a 23 year old opener from Karachi who has played 34 List A matches and averages 54 whereas Shahzad averages 45. In the recently concluded RBS One Day Cup, Latif averaged 114 with a highest score of 204 not out. Latif has a phenomenal conversion rate too, with 8 hundreds and 2 fifties which shows that when he gets going, he tends to score big.
It is accepted that Latif had a poor debut against Zimbabwe last year when he made 19 runs. However, many players have had lacklustre debuts. Surely Abdul Qadir or Younis Khan could not have made their decision based on one sole innings?

After his aggressive 50 against Sri Lanka at Lahore in Pakistan's last Test, Manzoor should have been selected for this series

Since Younis is known to prefer experience over youth, it is just mindboggling why he

Khalid Latif had an outstanding domestic one-day tournament but has been overlooked in favour of Ahmed Shahzad

would prefer to play Shahzad over Latif or Manzoor. Manzoor has so far shown inconsistent batting technique. His debut was impressive, but in his next few matches he struggled with shot selection. However, largely he impressed and in the 2nd Test vs Sri Lanka at Lahore, he played more confidently than Salman Butt. Is this how PCB wants to reward performance?

One could argue that recent domestic tournaments have little bearing, or should have little bearing, for international selection but it would be wrong for someone to say that. Abdul Qadir stated at the start of the RBS Cup that players who perform will be considered for the series against Australia. Selectors around the world use domestic tournaments to decide who should feature in a given forthcoming international assignment. It is not that case that Nasir Jamshed or Ahmed Shahzad are established players, if one wanted to argue that one poor domestic tournament should not affect their chances of playing against a top team.

Speaking of Nasir Jamshed, we have always spoken in support of him on LS. However, as a matter of principle he should also have not been selected and his place should have gone to Khurram Manzoor who as stated earlier, has so far performed adequately (this is on the basis that Shahzad’s place should have gone to Khalid Latif). Nasir was out of form in the RBS Cup and only scored 153 runs in 7 matches, whereas Manzoor had a much better tournament, scoring 246 runs in 6 matches.

The reason why is it submitted this selection is diabolical is because the opposition team is Australia, not Zimbabwe or Sri Lanka. There are reports that a second string team will be sent to play Pakistan, but even a third string team will be tough for Pakistan to handle. It seems as though there is a conspiracy to favour Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shahzad, whilst depriving Latif and Manzoor. This is because you only need to score 1 fifty in 5 matches against Australia to build a reputation as a formidable international-level opener. Salman Butt went through his worst form after his century against Australia in one of his earlier Tests, but he was constantly picked on the pretext of being the batsman who “scored a century against Australia”. So this series is a tremendous confidence booster and a golden chance in all respects for Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shahzad. The only problem is that there were other players who deserved this golden chance more than them.

Saeed Ajmal seems to be a useless selection

Saeed Ajmal has been satisfactory so far, but is he really useful to the team? Shoaib Malik has recently improved his bowling and seems to be bowling just as effectively as Ajmal. Ajmal is a pretty mediocre fielder and further, he failed to impress in the RBS Cup. Qadir had suggested selecting Yasir Shah, a young legspinner from NWFP who has been in good form over the past year or so. It is strange Qadir chose the ostensibly useless spinner Ajmal and ignored Shah, who is an attacking legspinner and shows considerable promise. With Malik and Afridi containing the batsmen and attacking them too occasionally, it would have been much more useful playing the attacking Yasir Shah, his inexperience notwithstanding.

Shoaib Akhtar and Kamran Akmal are other controversial selections. Whereas Akhtar is likely to be injured or unfit, Akmal’s batting performance is the RBS Cup was average. We have discussed both Akhtar and Akmal many times previously. One has to wonder that if Younis Khan is supporting the constant selection of Akmal, can he guarantee Akmal will stop dropping catches? Whoever has been responsible for the unfair selection of this squad should come forward and explain his choices. This series is all-important because the opposition is Australia and hence it was very crucial that the most in-form players should have been selected.

Danish Kaneria is facing the heat after consistent ineffective performances

Pakistan again ended up conceding over 600 runs to Sri Lanka in the 1st innings. Everyone was in unison over this wicket being a supportive one for both pacers and spinners but barring Umar Gul, there was no one else who left a mark. This article aims to cover just what is lacking in the current side which is resulting in such lacklustre team performances. Pakistan scored more than Sri Lanka in the Karachi Test; however that was largely due to the efforts of a flawless triple century by Younis and a huge century by Akmal. Akmal’s century however was nothing spectacular as it was achieved against a tired, directionless Sri Lankan attack consisting mainly of part timers such as Dilshan.

Danish Kaneria has been a huge disappointment for Pakistan ever since Akmal started dropping catches off his bowling. Akmal drops approximately 1-2 catches off Kaneria per Test and it seems this has done incalculable damage to Kaneria’s confidence. Surely this has to be the reason, because Kaneria started with a bang in international cricket and comparisons were drawn immediately with Shane Warne. Kaneria had virtually everything in his repertoire a successful spinner needs- flight, variation, bounce, turn capacity etc, yet Kaneria has completely failed to apply any of those elements successfully to his bowling of late. His biggest problem has been that he is constantly overpitching and all 6 balls of his overs are pitched at different lines and lengths. This is usually a simple problem to remedy, but Kaneria seems to be clueless. The most important aspect of a spinner in Test cricket is control, and if control is absent, the spinner is treated like a club level bowler which is exactly what is happening with Kaneria at the moment. PCB needs to consider whether Afridi’s dynamism and all round capabilities can provide what Pakistan is looking for. Although not a specialist legspinner in the Test mould, Afridi has experience and variety and he certainly can do a better job than Kaneria in the circumstances. Pakistan can also benefit from his spirited fielding, good motivational skills and aggressive batting.

Akmal must be the luckiest man on Earth

Akmal dropped Samaraweera off Kaneria on the 1st day when the batsman was on 68 and he went on to score 214. This is not the first time this has happened and it certainly won’t be the last. Akmal has dropped South Africans, Indians, Australians; in fact, batsmen from all teams in his under-achieving career, yet his place in the team seems to be set in stone on the pretext of some good batting performances.

What is the role of the wicketkeeper? It is to hold on to catches, concentrate, and motivate all the fielders. However, Akmal does the opposite of that. Since 3 years Akmal has been dropping catches in every Test and ODI series, yet he has not been replaced. Dropping 1 or 2 catches every few matches is acceptable, but Akmal drops them at an unbelievable rate and his carelessness has resulted in Mohammad Sami’s and Kaneria’s confidence shattering almost completely. Akmal’s latest victim is Shahid Afridi, who also happens to have a professional rivalry with Akmal’s best friend in the team, Shoaib Malik.

Enough is enough and PCB and Younis Khan need to consider whether they want a keeper who can hold onto his catches, or they want a batsman who occasionally dominates docile bowling attacks on flat pitches? I am no Don Bradman, but Akmal’s batting technique is laughable on bowling pitches. His record against good teams speaks for itself. He is not a good batsman and he is a worse keeper. Period. Players like Sarfraz Ahmed and Ali Asad who can keep better than Akmal have been hitting 100′s and 50′s at domestic level consistently and how are the selectors rewarding them?

Clueless coach who is living in past glories

Intikhab Alam is a miserable coach. He is more like a media manager- everyday he gives a few interviews to the media that contain useless, vapid rhetoric. Inti’s main problem is that being an old timer he is still living in the past and he believes another Imran Khan, Miandad or Wasim Akram will suddenly emerge and rescue the team. He needs to realise that cricket has changed and this is the age of glamour, money and global fame. Nowadays, apart from raw talent, what is needed is professionalism, discipline and relentless commitment. That should be the primary concern of Inti Alam. India has adapted to changing times very well and we are witnessing that in players like Dhoni, Raina and Gambhir. Pakistan does not have any deficiency of talent, but that talent needs to be nurtured at the highest level.

Barring Younis's triple century, hardly anything positive has stemmed in this series for Pakistan. There are plenty of challenges that await Younis.

Finally, Younis Khan needs to fire with all guns blazing. It is perhaps too early to set off the cannons of criticism, but Younis needs to stop covering himself by making defensive statements to the media, such as saying he believes Pakistan will not be able to win this series because of lack of match practice. That might be very true, but psychologically he must prepare his men to win each and every game. Pakistan cricket is at its lowest point for decades and the desperate situation requires a captain who is completely aggressive in every way, whether that is in his selection of players, field placing, body language or statements to the media. Younis said he wants to lead from the front like Imran Khan, and if he wants to do that he must garner more courage and aggression.

In conclusion, Pakistan needs to get rid of players like Kaneria and Akmal, who are agonising the team with their lack of commitment and half-hearted efforts. The strategies employed in this Test series are not good enough. In pace bowling, the PCB needs to keep rotating talented youngsters who have shown the pace and control to succeed at the highest level. Surely, someone will emerge who can emulate the heroics Wasim and Waqar so frequently performed for Pakistan? The PCB needs to remember the greats of the past and make tough decisions in the present, so that Pakistan’s future features continuous victories against all kinds of teams. But the first step is to get rid of this parasite in the team, namely the twosome of Kaneria and Akmal. The misery must end…….NOW!

YOUNUS KHAN IN THE MAKING OF A LEGEND

YOUNUS KHAN is slowly but surely is in the making of a legend for Pakistan cricket team. He is on the right path of success and taken his captaincy challenge to prove a point that he is not a “dummy captain”, but a leader who leads from the front. Unlike Malik, the burden of captaincy did not affect his batting, in fact it played an opposite role on his psyche. He realized that in the absence of his former colleagues Inzamam and Mohammad Yousuf the middle order is not so dependable and he has to play the anchor role which he did to perfection.

DON'T WORRY MALAK, I AM ALWAYS BEHIND YOU

Having said that it does not mean the other batsmen should continue to play the role of a second fiddle and always look up to Younus Khan as a father figure to rescue them in the times of trouble. Players like Shoaib Malik and Misbah with ample experience should pull up their socks and get ready for a big score in Lahore. Malik should not consider himself as a “fifty-sixty” player. His test performance is poor but his 11 years of experience at the international level is enough to handle any kinda pressure under any given circumstances. Misbah too, must strive to prove his worth, just a solo century in test cricket is not something one would expect from him to cherish for the rest of his life. Kamran Akmal the fourth most experienced batsman and the so-called wicketkeeper must understand that a big hundred on a dead wicket may assure his place for another few matches, but not forever. He needs to do something with his butterfingers. They may have proved to be good and handy while he was dealing with the former skipper or while he is was spreading butter on Ijaz’s Butt and, not when he is keeping the wickets.

LIKE A BEDBUG, THE KHATMAL WILL STAY IN THE TEAM

Doing analysis of a 5 day test match is always a difficult task, as one needs to rely too much on his memory or, jot down the notes. But, the postmortem of a dead test match is easy, one doesn’t need to delve deeper into the finer details of what went wrong and how those mistakes could have been rectified? The answer is simple, no more dead wickets. As Waqar Younus says, ” you need a grass on the wicket” and thats all.

At the end of the second day’s play when Sri Lanka posted a huge total of 644/7 declared, I said: “if Pakistan plays sensibly they can avoid defeat, if they play this match like a 50 over game or in twenty20 style they will end up scoring 250 odd runs.” Thanks God, Younus Khan played the anchor role just like Jayawardene the Sri Lankan captain did and partnerships evolved around his 313. Its a shame that he got out so cheaply on the 5th day after adding only 7 runs to his overnight total, because all Pakistanis were hoping to see him breaking, Inzamam and Hanif Mohammad’s record if not of Lara’s.

IF YOU ARE PERSISTENT, YOU ARE ALWAYS REWARDED

There is nothing much to write home about on this test match and now all focus is on Lahore. As expected the same squad has been retained but, the sources indicate that Sohail Khan will be replaced by Talha! Once again its a shame for the rookie fast bowler Sohail Khan if he is excluded in the second test. Because, it wasn’t his fault bowling a dead wicket, besides two catches of his bowling were dropped one by Malik and the other by Misbah. Getting wickets on a dead pitch is a rarity.

Among the batsmen I think Khurram Manzoor will go. I would like to see Fawad Alam in the team instead of the new batsman who scored a century in the two days warm up game against Sri Lanka. That kid is too young to be included in a crucial match because, Pakistan needs to win this match i.e., if they really want to prove a point to the rest of the world that staying away from the test arena for 14 months has not dampened their spirits. They fought bravely in the first test and were not intimidated by the huge total of 644 runs and neither by the deadly spin attack of Murali & Mendis. In fact they lofted them for sixes and fours.

If there is “a grass” on the Lahore pitch then Umar Gul & Co., should be able to extract some pace, bounce and swing but Vaas and Dilhara are also known to produce the same and Vaas especially is more experienced than Gul. So, the chances of winning for both sides are equal but, I still think Sri Lankan’s have an edge over Pakistan’s batting especially in players like, Jayawardene and Sangakara, both are capable of turning the tables and bring Sri Lanka on top. The chances of a draw in Lahore are very remote unless it rains or, the hooligans of Nawaz and Shahbaaz Sharif continue to march on the streets and burn tires or, damage properties to create chaos in the country and the teams decide to stay away from the trouble, then God bless Pakistan.

The PCB administration got changed and shortly after, Malik was sacked as captain. A new captain was appointed and all eyes were on how the relationship between the assertive captain Younis and Chief Selector Qadir would be.

Afridi struck form in the warm up game against Sri Lanka

Most people were quite curious about the point of having a warm up game between Afridi’s Patrons XI team and the Sri Lanka team. Some thought this was just a test to see if Afridi could contribute with the bat and make a place for himself in the test squad. Others, after watching the innings of Ahmed Shahzad and Azhar Ali, thought that this was an excuse to showcase the talent of these two players so that one of them could be included. Afridi played a decent knock with the bat that should have justified his inclusion in the Test squad, if his batting was the concern of the selectors. He did not get a wicket but only 3 of his regular bowlers did. If his batting was not a concern, then his place should have been guaranteed anyway, because he has been in form as regards his bowling. This is not to defend Afridi per se; it just boggles the mind why he was

Afridi's loss and Nasir's loss is Ahmed's gain

even chosen to captain in the warm up match if the selectors were expecting him to score a century?

Ahmed Shahzad, after his knock of 146, was chosen from the warm up squad and it is over Shahzad’s selection that apparently Younis and Qadir had a disagreement. Shehzad’s inclusion is certainly controversial, not least because Nasir Jamshed, who is a more consistent batsman, has been left out by the selectors and also because Shahzad was not even in the list of 22 probables that were proposed by Qadir a week ago. Shahzad is known to be a confident and clean striker of the ball, however he lacks the consistency of other openers like Nasir Jamshed and Khurram Manzoor. Manzoor has been the best opener in domestic cricket for a number of years now whereas Nasir Jamshed has been a top batsman for over a year.

Will Manzoor get another lifeline?

That leads to the question of whether Manzoor is likely to open along with Butt. Manzoor is an experienced opener at domestic level but so far in ODI’s he has appeared to be a mixed package. Whereas he has been gifted with the ability to stay at his crease, his shot selection appears very limited and he appears very restricted to his back foot. Today it was reported that Younis and Qadir might toy with the idea of opening with Malik and playing Asim Kamal and Faisal Iqbal in the middle order.

It is rumoured that Younis is not a great believer in young talent. On various TV shows

Whose career will Akmal try and ruin now?

Younis has stressed the need to have more mature players in the side. That is the reason why there were reports that he might want to try out Faisal Iqbal or Asim Kamal instead of Fawad Alam, and why he might want to persist with Kamran Akmal

As they say, what matters is "who you know.........."

instead of Sarfraz Ahmed. It is unclear who has been behind the controversial selections of Faisal, Asim and Akmal, but they are certainly selections that should not have been. With all the respect in the world to Asim Kamal, his recent domestic performances have not been anything to write home about. Plus, Fawad Alam’s unbelievable run at domestic level should automatically disqualify Kamal from international selection. Faisal Iqbal is a strange case, he is different to Bazid Khan because unlike Khan, he always makes some good scores in tournaments and he shows some good technique at times, but he lacks consistency. It is very sad that more deserving players are being deprived because of Miandad’s nepotism.

On the bowling front, the situation is clearer. Akhtar is unfit so Gul was always the strike bowler. Tanvir, despite his brilliant performance in his last first class match, was overlooked to the benefit of Mohammad Talha. Talha has been the most devastating bowler in the Q&A Trophy and it would have been criminal to ignore him from this squad. Kaneria was always Pakistan’s first choice spinner and he now needs to hope that Akmal gives him some support behind the stumps.

My preferred XI for the 1st Test now that Nasir Jamshed is not in the team:

Butt, Manzoor, Malik, Younis, Misbah, Fawad, Akmal, Gul, S Khan, Talha, Kaneria

Pakistan’s humiliating loss to Sri Lanka displayed everything that we on LS have spoken about numerous times; pathetic captaincy, favouritism towards certain players, lack of unity and lack of planning. Javed A Khan in his preview of the series predicted a 2-1 victory for Sri Lanka and how true did that come! 2-1 on paper does not appear that humiliating, but one needs to analyse how Sri Lanka came back at Pakistan and the margins of defeat in the 2nd and 3rd ODI. In the 2nd ODI Pakistan lost by 129 runs and in the 3rd it was an unbearable margin of 234 runs.

Malik was pathetic as captain as usual

Malik in the post-match ceremoy again tried to blame other factors for the defeat instead of his captaincy, citing that it is difficult if the team has not played much cricket, but if that was the case why did the team even bother practising before the commencement of this series? And what was the point playing in the Q&A Trophy if it would have been difficult beating Sri Lanka? Malik might as well have stayed at home flying kites in Sialkot, or spent time with Sayali Bhagat in India.

Why is it that only inside Pakistan Malik gets bundles of support,

Pathetic Akmal needs to go- should have been sacked 3 years ago

but outside Pakistan people consider him to be an idiot? Malik commands no respect from any cricketer outside Pakistan, whether that is Dhoni, Jayawardene or Greame Smith. Further, all foreign commentators have been extremely critical of Malik and just cannot understand why Malik keeps making ridiculous decisions. Dominic Cork is the latest addition to Malik’s critics, asking why Malik is so defensive and why he keeps making silly mistakes like not using Gul for his total quota of 10 overs and sending Akmal to bat at no 4? Malik’s captaincy was laughable in this series; in particular, he made some very basic errors in field placing to the benefit of the likes of Dilshan, Kandamby and Sangakkara.

Sarfraz is batting like a proper batsman in domestic cricket and he averages more than Akmal in first class

Akmal was again a major disappointment. He dropped about 4-5 catches and missed a very crucial stumping chance off Malik today. What is it about Akmal that Malik finds so attractive? For 3 years Akmal has been a major liability in the keeping department. He has played a major part in ruining careers of Kaneria and Sami, and now he is playing a major part in destroying Afridi’s career. He dropped 3 catches off Afridi this series. Again, most international commentators, from Robin Jackman, to Tony Creig to Dominic Cork have been highly critical of Akmal’s keeping and puzzled as to why Sarfraz Ahmed is not being encouraged, yet we keep seeing Akmal again and again. I remember how Jackman and Ian Bishop in some series kept asking Waqar Younis and Ramiz Raja, “Why is Sarfraz not being played?” and “What is he doing sitting on the bench?” but

Ramiz- along with Waqar, very biased in commentary

Ramiz and Waqar provided no answers.

Speaking of Ramiz and Waqar, what is their problem anyway? They have been silent on criticising Malik and giving Akmal his due. Isn’t the job of a commentator to be neutral and call a spade, a spade? Ramiz Raja on his TV show frequently supports Malik and Akmal when discussing cricket with his friends. Ramiz is usually Pakistan’s only saving grace in the commentary box with his suave appearance, reasonably good command of English and wit, yet observing his bias is an unpleasant experience.

Any reason left now to offer any more support to Akhtar?

It will be unfair to square the blame only on Malik and Akmal, but these two players have definitely tried their best to demoralise the team owing to their constant failures in their respective roles. Shahid Afridi risks being dropped permanently after failing to shine with both ball and bat, although Akmal’s lack of support behind the stumps has dented Afridi’s confidence completely. Yet, most fans expected better from Afridi this series. Shoaib Akhtar was thought to make a difference in this series, but he was the worst bowler and let the team down completely. For over a year Javed A Khan and myself have asked for Shoaib to be sacked from the team, yet Shoaib has many admirers who have lived in denial and accused myself and Javed A Khan for making these statements for controversial reasons. Yet, Javed A Khan and myself have always been on the dot with Shoaib’s performance and attitude. He is history.

The team needs someone like Fawad Alam, who is mature, left

Seriously, what more does he have to do to get into the team?

handed and can provide some stability in the middle order. Ever since the ABN AMRO T20 Cup in 2006, Fawad has been imperious in domestic cricket. He is unique in the sense that apart from Misbah he is the only player averaging more than 40 in all forms of domestic cricket in Pakistan. Nothing is guaranteed in life except death and taxes, and there is no guarantee Fawad will become the next Brian Lara. But, as far as deserving chances to perform goes, no player deserves it more than Fawad Alam.

Fawad Alam’s stats compared with other batsmen:

Name Format Average

Shoaib Malik First Class (4 day) 29

Shoaib Malik List A (one day) 39

Shoaib Malik T20 42

Younis Khan First class 51

Younis Khan List A 35

Younis Khan T20 25

Misbah ul Haq First class 51

Misbah ul Haq List A 46

Misbah ul Haq T20 43

Mohd Yousuf first class 51

Mohd Yousuf List A 41

Mohd Yousuf T20 17

Fawad Alam First class 57

Fawad Alam List A 44

Fawad Alam T20 41

Hence, you can see Fawad Alam generally has better stats than everyone except Misbah ul Haq,

Future captain of Pakistan?

and compared to Misbah he has a higher first class average.

In conlusion, enough is enough and a revamp is definitely needed. PCB needs to stop destroying cricket and use the right players. Akmal needs to be replaced by Sarfraz Ahmed, Malik needs to be replaced by Fawad Alam and Shahid Afridi needs to be kept on his toes. The PCB will not make Afridi the captain, so perhaps it is in Afridi’s best interests to resign from international cricket rather than face the humiliation of being sacked permanently. With Younis still confused about captaincy and Misbah suffering from finding his role in the team and inconsistency, Umar Gul is perhaps the best option for captaincy, as he is the only player with a defined role, proven track record and required aggression and commitment. So, my vote for Pakistan’s future captain is Umar Gul. He should hope, however, that Akmal doesn’t start dropping catches off his bowling too!

Most Pakistani fans are hailing this series as a positive occurrence in the scheme of things. However I don’t believe there is any cause for celebration. This result was expected and nothing new or extra ordinary happened in this series which was not expected from before, from Pakistan’s perspective.

The biggest worry for Pakistan was the fact that all of the matches were closely contested. In the first match Akmal helped Pakistan pull off an almost impossible victory from the jaws of defeat. In the second and third matches Pakistan bowled much better, yet if the Windies batsmen had batted the full 50 overs, they would have come very close to the target Pakistan set for them. What no commentator has highlighted so far is the fact that Pakistani bowlers could not prevent West Indies’ main batsmen, Gayle, Chanderpaul and Sarwan from making sizable scores in almost every match. Three out of the four best batsmen in terms of run-scoring in this series, were West Indian; namely, Gayle, Chanderpaul and Sarwan. Their batting averages were 78, 73 and 54 respectively. If I was Shoaib Malik, Ijaz Butt or Intikhab Alam I would have sleepless nights contemplating why Pakistan bolwers could not dominate these batsmen. I understand they are very good players, but that should not be an excuse because Pakistan also has bowlers like Gul, Tanvir and Afridi who are world class in limited overs cricket.

Pakistani bowlers could not dominate the West Indian stalwarts Gayle and Chanderpaul

One might feel that I am being too unsupportive of Pakistan or too critical, because at the end of the day Pakistan won the series. My response to that is, West Indies is like a minnow team and apart from the trio of Gayle, Chanderpaul and Sarwan the only two other decent players they have are Powell and Taylor, who are good bowlers. This is actually the worst West Indies team I can recall from recent memory. If Pakistan could not dismiss players like Gayle and Chanderpaul then it means there is something seriously amiss from the Pakistani bowling attack.

Waqar Younis may be appointed the bowling coach soon, and I hope he seriously does some good work with young Pakistani pacers because if West Indies had 2 or 3 more renowned international players like Bravo, the result may well have been opposite.

In terms of ratings, Pakistan has now been elevated to no 5 in the world in ODI’s. This is a farce because this year Pakistan has played minnow teams mostly. I can’t believe the PCB declares it is looking to the future when it is sticking with a direction-lacking and spineless captain Shoaib Malik and it is happy with Pakistan’s “ascension” in world ratings when all Pakistan is doing is beating below average teams with the assistance of their below average captain Malik, who is simply not captaincy material.

Malik may well be back in business for a few more cricket series

Under Shoaib Malik the Pakistan team has gone from bad to worse. Malik was not pathetic in this Fortune Cup, but he was not outstanding either. Although Malik’s 66 off only 50 balls in the 1st match was encouraging, he was not at his best in the remaining matches. However, more than this batting or bowling, it was his captaincy that again came under the scanner. He made ridiclous Powerplay selections and he was very rigid with the batting line up. Also, he ought to be criticised for not using more young players in the 3rd match, as Pakistan had already won the series and could afford giving more exposure to its talented youngsters. Malik’s basic problem is one of self-preservation and selfishness. That is the reason why senior players Yousuf, Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar have been critical of him. He is desperate to see Pakistan’s rise in the world rankings so his status in the team can remain protected. That is not the attitude you want from your captain. What kind of precedent does this set for the future captains of Pakistan?

"I'll show Akmal how to catch a ball............"

Oops I did it again..................

Akmal has been an enigma, yet at the same time we are used to seeing inconsistent displays from the whole team as well as individual players which makes Akmal’s peformance appear tolerable. Akmal dropped plenty of catches in this Cup and the person who lost out the most as a result of Akmal’s lack of focus was Shahid Afridi, who did not bowl badly in the first two matches but was seriously let down by Akmal. Pakistan however, was also let down by Afridi’s batting performance yet again. The new selection committee has not been announced yet, but chances are we may not see Afridi playing for Pakistan for some time, which will be a big blow to those supporing him as the rightful captain of Pakistan.

Lastly, the form of openers Butt and Manzoor would be worrying, although Butt’s miserable form is likely to be only a temporary problem. Khurram Manzoor played very sensibly in the 1st match, but appeared clueless in the 2nd and 3rd matches. It is debatable whether Manzoor would be selected in the future, but perhaps he deserves another chance because of his 2 50s in his first 2 matches.

To conclude, this series established nothing new for Pakistan and the concerns carried on from before remain. Unless the captain is changed with immediate effect, Pakistan can not tread on the path of success. There are many short term and long term solutions, but the first thing that is needed is the change of captain. Don’t be fooled by the ostensible glory of a 3-0 victory and the elevation in international team ratings.
